Team players & movement

A history of the team make up over the years; and movement of players

When  I first contacted Sam McCarthy-Fox in late 2003 and he said if you put a team together you could participate in the 2004 event; I was really delighted and excited about the prospect.

Then came the next interesting part:  the task of putting a team together. Remember that for most of us playing marbles is something our generation played as children (and the new generation even plays less of it in the playground or outdoor). I talked to a few people in various places, family & friends, work, neighbours etc.. I was surprisingly fortunate to have family & friends warming up to the idea.

Team constitution by year

Here we have all the players making up the team for a particular year and also listed in the order of play for the team event. At the end of the list, there is a list of those players and fan club members playing the Golden Oldies (GO) event. We sometimes got my mother (Hakima) and mother-in-law (Nacera) as well as friends playing the GO if/where possible.

Movement of players

A total of 15 players made up the Yorkshire Meds team (including the current 6).

• 2023: Amalia leaves after the 2022 tournament, Djamel joins the team
• 2019: Amalia joins the team (Lydia stands down)
• 2018: Papi Akil passed away. Lydia joins temporarily (till permanent replacement)
• 2016:  Karim joins the team (Nacera stands down)
• 2013: Rose leaves after 2012 tournament. Nacera joins temporarily (till permanent replacement)
• 2011: Aziz leaves after the 2010 tournament, Rose steps in
• 2006: Eyad leaves after the 2005 tournament, Leila joins the team
• 2005: Aziz and Bob join the team
• 2004: Hesham & his girlfriend were a one-off to help start the team (Bob and Aziz join in 2005)
